Session 1: Marty Sadlier
Marty will highlight the importance of obtaining up to date valuations and the impact of the current economic conditions on insurance replacement costs. This session will highlight the risks of not using a qualified quantity surveyor to provide insurance replacement values amongst the common pitfalls to avoid when giving advice to your clients on insurance replacement values.

Marty has over 25 years’ experience in the building and construction industry, commencing his career as a shopfitter/carpenter. Marty has developed his career gaining experience in construction, sales and estimating. With specialist knowledge in all estimating and cost planning (auditing for financial institutions, contract documentation, problem solving, progress payments and risk assessment). Marty possesses extensive skills, knowledge and experience in the building industry, and his well-developed organisational and administrative skills enable him to effectively manage client projects. Marty is a RICS certified expert witness, a Certified Quantity Surveyor (CQS) and sits on the interviewing panel for Australian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (AIQS). Marty has worked on countless landmark developments throughout Australia and has assisted to develop project management course material for the Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA). Marty is passionate about providing thought leadership to the property sector to ensure a comprehensive understanding of all construction costs, cost escalations, underinsurance and potential risks on their developments. Areas of expertise include: • Passion for ensuring construction quality is maintained and reported • Regular involvement in producing Building Cost Estimates for clients • Expertise in Cost Planning Consulting Specialist Expertise: Marty has a comprehensive understanding of all construction costing and consultancy services offered by MCG Quantity Surveyors. His active involvement in a range of projects over the past 25 years has allowed him to develop expert level knowledge of the construction industry and as such is regularly called as an expert witness to various court proceeding across Australia.

Session 2: Stephen Stafford
Stephen will explore the impacts of underinsurance in the aftermath of a loss, using real claim examples to demonstrate how underinsuring clients’ risks can have an adverse impact on the outcome of the claim. Stephen has the unique experience of navigating the difficulties of the issue in both Broking and Loss Adjusting roles and will, through sharing details about what is considering when assessing a loss, provide insights on how to avoid underinsurance.

Stephen is qualified as a Chartered Accountant and Chartered Certified Account spending 17 years working in independent general Accounting practices in UK, specialising in financial and systems audit. In 2011, Stephen moved to Australia and joined Marsh as a consultant, working in claim preparation and risk consulting. Stephen moved to Singapore with Marsh in 2014 before returning to Australia in 2018. During his time with Marsh, Stephen managed numerous Property Damage and Business Interruption claims throughout the Asia-Pacific region and supported the forensic accounting team on a number of financial crime and forensic accounting engagements. In 2021, Stephen joined Crawford as a Senior Forensic Accountant.
